Protect your access to funds while abroad by diversification. Make a plan to access cash, load a form of payment to your phone, and if possible, take an ATM/debit card as well as one credit card.
Inform your bank or credit card of your travel dates and destinations to avoid having your account(s) blocked.
Obtain a PIN for your credit card as the chip-and-pin transaction method are more common abroad (instead of a signature).
Record how to contact your bank in case your cards are inoperable, lost or stolen.
While Abroad
Manage your bank accounts through password protected, secure Wi-Fi connections. Maximize security when using payment Apps such as Venmo, Zelle or Cash App.
Open a local bank account for long stay abroad (where permitted).
Use a VPN to secure your internet connection and protect your sensitive financial information from potential cyber threats.
Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for financial transactions; if necessary, use a mobile hotspot or a secure connection.
After Your Trip
Review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions and keep track of your receipts to ensure all charges are accurate.
Change any passwords you used while traveling and monitor your accounts for a few weeks after your trip to catch any delayed or fraudulent transactions.
