Handling Your Finances

Before You Travel

  • Protect your access to funds while abroad by diversification. Make a plan to access cash, load a form of payment to your phone, and if possible, take an ATM/debit card as well as one credit card.
  • Inform your bank or credit card of your travel dates and destinations to avoid having your account(s) blocked.
  • Obtain a PIN for your credit card as the chip-and-pin transaction method are more common abroad (instead of a signature).
  • Record how to contact your bank in case your cards are inoperable, lost or stolen.

While Abroad

  • Manage your bank accounts through password protected, secure Wi-Fi connections. Maximize security when using payment Apps such as Venmo, Zelle or Cash App.
  • Open a local bank account for long stay abroad (where permitted).
  • Use a VPN to secure your internet connection and protect your sensitive financial information from potential cyber threats.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for financial transactions; if necessary, use a mobile hotspot or a secure connection.

After Your Trip

  • Review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions and keep track of your receipts to ensure all charges are accurate.
  • Change any passwords you used while traveling and monitor your accounts for a few weeks after your trip to catch any delayed or fraudulent transactions.
